I called MB today to find out if there are any open recalls on the 1980 450SL and their system says it has no open recalls on it.
She was pleasantly surprised to find that my car is actually in their system and is not a grey market one. She could even see some of the details of its shipping sheet. It sounds like it originally shipped with a brown cloth top, and I think what I saw is a black one. Does anyone know if that brown cloth refers to the interior cloth or the outside?
I’ll have to double check the color of the cloth top later. My wife is getting a little upset at the amount of time I am spending with the car.

I’ve only seen SLs with black and white soft tops. White being much older, black being somewhat newer. Does that mean yours is the same? No, but that’s all I’ve seen. I do believe I’ve seen R107s with other color soft tops, but I just never payed much attention to them (admittedly not the body style for me, unless it’s an SLC).
The inside of my soft top does match my interior, which is tan, and the outside color is black. Maybe that can shed light?
A quick google search shows more than just black on the R107s for the soft top, so sure.
I would try doing a very in-depth detail, clay bar and the whole nine yards. Definitely look to do something with the wheels, a re-paint could make a huge difference even. As annoyed as the wife is, once it’s ready for it’s maiden voyage, I think she’ll come to enjoy it. My girlfriend absolutely loves my SL, and was one of the biggest reasons for me to purchase it. As it slowly shines back up, maybe try to include her? My girlfriend wont even wash her own car, but I’m sure if your wife is handy with sewing or intricate work, maybe you can see if she’d like to tackle the seat covers if they need help, or if something needs to be re-upholstered, let her choose colors/patterns. Worth a shot, and she can’t say you’re ignoring her!

The only things the interior needs is new sun visors, new dash, and some plastic repair. The seats have either been really well taken care of or were recovered recently. All the carpet could use a good wash, and the floor mats need replaced since the rubber backing is disintegrating. Not much along those lines for my wife to do. Also, our son is due in 5 weeks so its the balance between nursery/work and car that is at issue.

Bugger. Well, your R107 should have a back seat, and IIRC, there should actually be a childseat option for it. I know my R129 is the US version so it doesn’t, but the Euro ones do. Worth a shot to look into!

Really, a back seat... the rail goes all the way back so I can’t imagine anyone ever fitting in there.
Oh, look at that... all sorts of options for those little jump seats. So is it an option that you could add on or was it stock and people took them out... not sure I would want to lose the speakers because where would they go then?

It was stock for the Euro/Japanese market cars. US market cars never really were officially made with them, but occasionally you can find one that was brought in.
It would be a question for Benzworld as far as whether you can easily put them in or not, someone there would know for sure.
